Ghana's most successful football club Asante Kotoko celebrates 91st anniversary today

Ghana's most successful football club Asante Kotoko celebrates it 91st birthday today capping off a proud moment for the Garden City club.

The club was formed on August 31, 1935, and it has produced some of Ghana's most astute footballers across generations.

Asante Kotoko has produced two African best footballers in Ibrahim Sunday and Abdul Karim Razak who were crowned best on the continent in 1970 and 1978 respectively.

Other notable names that have come through for Asante Kotoko are former AFCON winners Osei Kofi, Samuel Opoku Nti, Opoku Afriyie, Kwesi Appiah, Kwadwo Addae Kyenkyenhene and Charles Kumi ‘CK’ Gyamfi among others.

Asante Kotoko are record winners of the Ghana Premier League (GPL) with 24 titles.

The Porcupines have also won two CAF Champions League titles in 1970 and 1983 and were finalists in 1967, 1971, 1973, 1982 and 1993.

Asante Kotoko were named Africa club of the last century by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) for their successes on the continent.

Also on the domestic scene, Asante Kotoko have won 10 FA Cups, a record four Super Cups, 16 SWAG Cups and a record nine President's Cups among other titles.

As they celebrate their 91st anniversary as one of Africa’s biggest football clubs, they will look for more success in the coming football season.

Asante Kotoko will compete on two fronts next season in the GPL and the FA Cup competition as they look for more honours.

They begin the GPL campaign this weekend with an away fixture against newly promoted Debibi United as the new season unfolds.
