Cameroon wins maiden WAFCON title as Nigeria misses out on FIFA Women's World Cup

Cameroon are the new African women's football champions after they defeated Malawi on Sunday to claim their maiden title.

The Lioness beat Malawi 4-0 in the grand finale of this year's tournament played at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium, Rabat, Morocco.

This emphatic win, ends Nigeria's reign after they won the last edition of the tournament also held in Morocco.

The Nigerians, also misses out on the FIFA Women's World Cup to be hosted by Brazil after they lost their play-off to South Africa.

Cameroon, have been two-time runners up in this competition in the past, but, they were not to be denied a third time as they completely dominated this one-sided affair.

The Cameroonians took a commanding 3-0 first half lead before rounding off an excellent campaign in the second half to complete the demolition over Malawi who surprised many with their football on their debut campaign.

Algeria beat hosts Morocco on penalties on Saturday to finish third, their highest placed finish in the history of the tournament.

All four nations, have qualified to play at the FIFA Women's World Cup to be hosted by Brazil in 2027.
