I still pay royalties to my brother for using his name - Jay Jay Okocha

Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has revealed how the nickname that became synonymous with his legendary career came about.

Okocha explained that the name dates back to his childhood, when he played football on the streets with his brothers.

With several boys in the neighbourhood also named Austin, his friends began calling him “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother” to distinguish him from the others. Eventually, “Jay-Jay” stuck.

Okocha also revealed that when he travelled abroad, people often struggled to pronounce his full name, Augustine, making “Jay-Jay” much easier.

“I decided to adopt the name and put it in my passport. I still pay royalties to my brother,” he joked during an appearance on the ObiOne Podcast.

The former PSG, Bolton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe star went on to become one of Nigeria’s most celebrated footballers, renowned worldwide for his flair, creativity and extraordinary dribbling skills.

Even years after retirement, Jay-Jay remains a name forever linked with Nigerian football greatness.
