Hundreds Celebrate Uncle Ato At Celebrity Golf Club As He Turns 70

Hundreds of golfers both amateur and professionals, turned up at the Celebrity Golf Club, Sakumono to celebrate an astute golfer at the club.

They showed up last Friday to celebrate the life and career of Ato Kwamena Asankoma known in Ghanaian golfing circles as Uncle Ato.

Uncle Ato, has been on the golf course in Ghana for over 50 years, first as a caddy before taking up the sport as a player and now an instructor.

His journey in this discipline, started in Kumasi in 1971, and it has taken him to Tarkwa, Akwatia and now at Sakumono where he is the resident instructor/coach at the Celebrity Golf Club.

To celebrate this milestone, Uncle Ato hosted a special tournament that brought together golfers from far and near for a memorable occasion.

The one-day 18-hole contest, was opened to both amateur and professionals, and it was a keenly contested affair.

Prizes were handed out to golfers who distinguished themselves in all categories both male and female.

In a chat with kaysportsghana.com, Uncle Ato expressed gratitude to all for showing up to celebrate his success in golf.

“I have a lot of memories to share since taking up the sport and, I want to thank all for the love they have shown me.”

On whether the sport has a future in Ghana, he answered in the affirmative and believes that with the right direction, the country stands to gain a lot going forward.

He was happy that many young people are taking up the sport and, he as an instructor, will always be on hand to offer them coaching that can take them to the top.
