Richard Akpokavie received 44 votes to surpass his rival Michael Aggrey, who secured 19 votes at the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC), Elective Congress held at the Accra International Conference Center on Saturday.
His win, signified a change in luck for Akpokavie, who fell short in the Presidential race four years ago.
At that time, Akpokavie lost by seven votes to the then-current President Ben Nunoo Mensah.
He had formerly held the position of General Secretary of the GOC from 2017 to 2021 before challenging Ben Nunoo Mensah in the 2021 Presidential election.
A graduate of Achimota School, he has experience as an athlete, coach, manager, and administrator.
Mr Akpokavie led Ghana’s national hockey team as captain. He is the first Ghanaian appointed as an arbitrator on the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS), which oversees the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
Mawuko Afadzinu was elected unchallenged as 1st Vice President, just as 2nd Vice President Frederick Otu Lartey and Assistant Secretary General Bawa Fuseini were.
Ernest Danso defeated Mohammed Mahadi to become the new 3rd Vice President, while Evans Yeboah narrowly won against Isaac Duah for the Treasurer position, with Nii Lante Bannerman appointed as the new Assistant Treasurer.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Baadae Sahnoon lost his Secretary General role to Mohammed Muniru Kassim.
Additional board members include George Qwusu Ansah aka Nana Makattah, Delphina Quaye, Edwin Amankwah, Rafatu Inusah, Kamal Sulley, George Tettey, Nathaniel Johnson, and Samuel Tetteh Ayer.
The new Team was sworn into office by the Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, in the presence of an ANOCA representative from Nigeria, outgoing President Ben Nunoo Mensah, and former President Peter Kpordugbe.
