Body Of Late Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju Returned To Lagos, Wife Expresses Appreciation

The body of the late Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju has been returned to his home country, following his tragic death in Ghana in March this year during a bout.

The body was airlifted today, from Kotoka International Airport, Accra and, has arrived in Lagos, Nigeria for pre burial rites to begin.

The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), has confirmed in a statement.

It extended heartfelt appreciation to Ghanaians, the boxing community, journalists, and media outlets for their steadfast support and solidarity since that tragic incident that claimed the life of the Nigerian boxer.

The GBA, also assured that it will continue to provide updates on the upcoming funeral arrangements.

In preparation for the final rites in Lagos, the GBA has assigned two key representatives, Gideon Hassen Appiah, a member of the GBA Board, and Lateykwei Lartey, Head Coach of Fit Square Boxing Gym.

The pair traveled to Nigeria in advance of the body’s arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

GBA President Abraham Kotei Neequaye revealed that the Authority has sent $3,000 to its representatives in Nigeria. The amount comprises a $1,500 purse contributed by Gordon Frimpong, CEO of Osibor Boxing Management, and an additional $1,500 donation from the GBA.

Meanwhile, wife of the late boxer, Maria Adebusola Bamgbose, has expressed gratitude and relief at the companionate response from the GBA and the CPDE Media Group.

She said in a release that, “In the mist of heartbreak, your leadership and humanity reminded me that I was not alone.

I extend my heartfelt appreciation for the actions that brought light and dignity to a dark and painful journey.”

She ended by saying: “Your efforts have given me strength, clarity, and a renewed belief in the unity and responsibility we all share within the boxing community.

Thank you for honouring my husband not only as a fighter in the ring but as a man whose life and legacy matter beyond it.”

The date for the funeral of the late boxer, would be announced later.
