The Porcupines, beat bottom side Karela United 1-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium, Kumasi on Sunday to move a point clear of Bibiani Gold Stars and Heart of Lions who are second and third respectively.
Captain of the day, Justice Blay, scored the lone goal from the spot in the 60th minute after Baba Yahya was brought down in the area.
Asante Kotoko, are aiming to win the competition for a record extending 25th time, and, they have started the second round of the season on a good note.
The weekend round of matches, started on Saturday at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon where Accra Lions beat Medeama SC 1-0 to stay in the relegation zone with 16 points.
Medeama SC, are seventh on the table with 26 points, after losing their sixth game of the season.
Sunday’s other games, saw Legon Cities beat Bibiani Gold Stars 1-0 at the UG Stadium, Legon to move out of the relegation zone with 17 points.
Heart of Lions, posted a 2-1 home win over Aduana FC at the Kpando Stadium to keep pace with the leaders.
Aduana FC, are 13th with 18 points, just a point away from the drop zone.
Accra Hearts of Oak drew goalless with Basake Holy Stars at the AAK Sports Arena, Ampian to stay fifth on the log with 30 points.
Holy Stars, are ninth on the table with 23 points on their debut campaign in the Ghanaian top-flight.
Bechem United beat Nations FC 2-0 at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park, Bechem as they remained unbeaten at home this season.
The Hunters, are sixth with 30 points with Nations FC fourth on the table with 32 points.
Young Apostles beat Nsoatreman FC 1-0 at the Wenchi Sports Stadium to take their points tally to 21 as they jumped to the 11th position on the table.
Nsoatreman FC, have 18 points and, in 14th position after 18 matches.
Berekum Chelsea posted a hard-fought 1-0 home win over Vision FC at the Golden City Park, Berekum.
They are eighth on the log with 25 points, with Vision FC 12th with 19 points.
Defending champions FC Samartex, drew 1-1 with Dreams FC at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena, Samreboi.
The Timber Giants, are 10th on the table with 23 points, with Dreams FC still in the bottom three with 17 points.
