2025 Willie Williams Athletics Championship at Legon Saturday

The Willie Williams Athletics Championship, one of Ghana’s oldest athletics events, enters its seventh edition on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the Legon Sports Stadium, Accra from 8.30am to 5pm.

Conceived by James Thompson, a former athlete mentored by the late Willie Williams, this competition has discovered remarkable talents like Benjamin Azamati, the current national record holder in the 100m, who was the winner of the 100m in the inaugural edition of the event in 2018.

Solomon Hammond clinched the 100m title in the second edition, while Rasheed Saminu and James Dadzie secured first and second places in the third edition; these athletes now reside in the United States and are currently part of Ghana’s 4x100m relay team.

James Thompson Anlaaminge, the organizer of the Tizza Football Gala and the upcoming Tizza Marathon, indicated that some athletics clubs have signed up for the competition.

The current SWAG male athlete of the year, Edwin Gadayi, the 2020 Olympian Sarfo Ansah, the Ghana Armed Forces team, a team from the Ashanti Region, the University of Ghana, and numerous individual athletes have all registered to compete on Saturday.

The Paa Willie Williams Athletics Meet has been incorporated into the Ghana Athletics calendar, making it the first event of the year.

He noted that an electronic timer and all necessary facilities and equipment will be available for athletes to achieve their best times of the year.
